Handy Cognitive Frameworks
Recently, I’ve found myself referencing some fairly well known concepts only to find out the people I was talking to never heard of them. Here are a few that are easy to understand and super helpful. A quick thread:
The Overton Window
The range of ideas society views as “acceptable” shifts over time. What seems radical today can become mainstream tomorrow. The goal of many politicians is to stay within the window in the short term (to be electable) but to move the window over time.
The Red Queen Effect
In competitive fields you have to keep innovating just to stay relevant. Markets move fast so if you pause you risk being left behind. In the Startup world (AI in particular) it’s a relentless race to keep pace with change.
The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon
When you learn something new, you start noticing it everywhere. It’s not that the thing you’ve learned about is suddenly more common…it’s that your brain is now primed to spot it.
The Endowment Effect
You value things more just because you own them. This bias shapes many decisions in life but is profoundly noticeable in one’s reluctance to properly value and make decisions regarding “investment assets” (stocks, tokens, real estate, etc.).
These are just a few concepts that I found myself using in conversations recently. If you’re not familiar with them they’re definitely worth studying!
