Compound Learning
Originally a thread on X/Twitter:
Compound interest is a powerful principle.
Compound learning is even more powerful.
The most successful people in life understand this. A few thoughts:
Albert Einstein famously said:
“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it. He who doesn’t, pays for it.”
But interest isn’t the only thing that can compound — learning can!
Compound learning is the knowledge equivalent of compound interest. If compound interest is “interest-on-interest,” then compound learning is “knowledge-on-knowledge”.
The more you’ve learned the more you understand how things work. Knowing how things work helps you learn.
A truism is that the most successful people in life are very conscious and deliberate about compound learning.
Acquiring knowledge and skills is an investment that pays dividends forever and successful people understand this fundamental principle of life.
And people who are compound learners apply it in all aspects of their lives. Skills can be stacked everywhere.
Education can be stacked. Fitness can be stacked. Job experiences can be stacked. Leadership can be stacked. Compound learning isn’t about learning facts and figures!
So my suggestion is that when faced with an important decision, optimize for compound learning vs. short term benefit.
Work on acquiring knowledge and skills that have extremely long half-lives and then be patient enough to let the magic of compounding work!
